Alex Rodriguez is officially back and starting in his first Spring Training game against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday afternoon.
Many fans aren’t supporting him following his admitted steroid use and multiple suspensions.
Why Yankees fans aren’t supporting their own player is confusing to me. He’s a Yankee, and Yankee fans should support him.
But the truth of the matter is that he doesn’t have that support.
Many people don’t know why they should support A-Rod, if at all. I’m here to clear that up for you and tell you why you should support him, with the “Top 10 Reasons to Support Alex Rodriguez”:
1. He helped the team win the 2009 World Series.
Remember Alex Rodriguez during that 2009 World Series run? There were always questions on whether or not he could produce in the Playoffs, and he answered them by helping the Yankees win their 27th title. A few guys came up big down the stretch that October, but without Rodriguez we might not have seen the Yankees win #27 that year.
I’m pretty sure he was using steroids that year, but I honestly don’t know. It’s hard to keep track of all the different years he was accused of, and admitted to, using steroids.
2. He’s in fifth place on the all-time home runs list.
Rodriguez is in fifth place on the list with 654 home runs, putting him 108 behind Barry Bonds. Did steroids help him reach 654? Probably. But hey, they still count, right? RIGHT?
Okay, this reason led directly back to his steroid use, but there’s more!
3. He only needs 7 home runs to pass Willie Mays on the all-time home runs list.
Oh, man. Another steroid-tarnished accomplishment? What’s next?
4. He won the AL MVP award three times – twice as a Yankee.
Remember how much we all loved Rodriguez back when he brought the MVP award to the Bronx in 2005 and 2007? Remember how his massive contract all seemed worth it? Remember when he played in 162 and 158 games, respectively, in those two MVP seasons? Remember when he hit 54 homeruns and recorded 156 RBI in 2007? We all do. And it was terrific.
Steroids? Probably. Oh well…
5. He moved from SS to 3B for Derek Jeter.
This one is nice, and (probably) wasn’t tarnished by steroid use. Alex Rodriguez, despite joining the Yankees as a Gold Glove-winning shortstop in 2004, moved to third base to allow the Yankees’ captain to stay at his position. And then he won a Gold Glove at third!
Say what you want about his (steroid-aided) hitting, but his fielding was always fantastic!
6. He puts up with a lot of crap.
Think of how much A-Rod has to deal with. From constant questions regarding how he fits in the locker room, to constant questions and reports by media effectively taking shots at him, he hasn’t responded negatively to any of it. You try to do that. I bet you couldn’t.
7. He apologized for his steroid use.
That’s nice, I guess… Yay?
8. He sued Major League Baseball.
That’s right, he sued the whole thing. That took guts. Would you go up against an entire professional sports league? I bet you wouldn’t. And A-Rod did. What a guy.
9. He has respect for the New York Yankees organization.
GM Brian Cashman has said negative things about him. The team was reportedly looking for a way to void his contract. Not once did Alex Rodriguez come out and trash the organization. He has respect for the New York Yankees, and that should go a long way.
10. He’s not on the Boston Red Sox.
At the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.
I support Alex Rodriguez, and will continue doing so throughout the season.
