After a slow start, the New York Yankees appear to officially be back.
Facing the red hot New York Mets who were on an 11 game winning streak, the Yankees held their ground and took two out of three from their cross town rivals.
That’s now the second straight series the Yankees won against the hottest team in baseball, last week taking three out of four from the Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees took game one with an impressive 6-1 victory to snap the Mets 11 game streak. Mark Teixeria was outstanding at the plate , homering twice and driving in four runs. Michael Pineda was dominant on the mound, throwing 7.2 innings of 1 run baseball, giving up just 5 hits to a streaking Mets offense.
The second game at Yankee stadium was the only bad game the Yankees played. They were completely shut down by Mets ace Matt Harvey, who went 8.2 innings, giving up just two runs. Teixeria did homer again, raising his total to 8 on the year. CC Sabathia struggled mightily, giving up 7 runs on 9 hits in just 5 innings of work. He not has a 5.98 ERA in the year.
In the rubber match of the series, the Bronx Bombers clinched the series victory with a 6-4 comeback win. The Mets scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings, taking advantage of a struggling Nathan Eovaldi. The Yankees excellent bottom of the first lead them to victory though, scoring 4 runs against the Mets veteran pitcher Jonathan Niese.
Curtis Granderson hit a home run against his former Yankee team, and Alex Rodriguez hit career home run 659, moving him to just one behind MLB legend Willie Mays. The Yankees unbeatable duo of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller then shut down the game to earn the win.
While the Yankees starting pitching struggled outside of Pineda, the bullpen was phenomenal. They combined to pitch 11 innings, giving up just a single run on 3 hits. They were most impressive in game 3, going 4.2 innings not surrendering a single hit, and just one base runner.
After a slow 3-6 start, the Yankees are finally clicking. They are now 8-2 in their last ten and control first place in the American League East. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez are continuing to silence their critics who thought they were washed up, combining to hit four home runs for seven RBI’s this series. Brett Gardner is also getting in a groove, going 4-11.
The Yankees will look to continue their hot streak in a three game series vs the Tampa Bay Rays, who they just swept a week ago.
