Third string goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald is going on loan, according to New York City Football Club’s official website.
Fitzgerald will join the Carolina RailHawks of the North American Soccer League until June 7th, 2015.
Fitzgerald hasn’t featured yet this season. He is third on the depth chart, behind veteran Josh Saunders and Ryan Meara, who is currently on loan from the New York Red Bulls.
Fitzgerald featured twice in the preseason: Once against St. Mirren and the Houston Dynamo. While he is an exciting prospect, he is likely struggling to stay fresh due to a lack of first team soccer. He’ll likely be a starter with the RailHawks, and regain some form that he can utilize if he one day overtakes Saunders as NYCFC’s top keeper.
At 27 years old, Fitzgerald still has several years left in him. The former Wake Forest Deamon Deacon has a bright future at NYCFC, and this loan spell will undoubtably help him down the road and gain experience in a starting position.
