What Is Going On With The Yankees?

The New York Yankees have reached a low point in the middle of their season. After a strong start to the season and being in first place in the weak American League East division, the team has gone completely backwards losing 9 of their last 10 games and are on a current five game losing streak. The team is struggling to hit, their pitching hasn’t been well and their season could be a whole lot of trouble if this continues.

Back on May 10, Mother’s Day the Yankees had just taken three of four from the Baltimore Orioles in a four game series at the Stadium. That was a huge series for the Yankees, as it put some distance between them and the Orioles in the division and kept the momentum going for the team. They continued that momentum the next day when they opened up a four game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field. The Yankees hit five home runs that night and pounded the Rays 11 – 5. The big win seemingly sent out a statement to the rest of the American League East, but it was not to be as the Yankees went on to lose the next three games to the Rays and lost three out of four in the series.

The Yankees struggles continued in a three game weekend series against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. They lost two of three to the Royals and got blown out on Friday night 12 – 1 and shutout on Sunday afternoon 6 – 0. The team didn’t play well at all during the series. It didn’t get any better for the Yankees as they went on to get swept in a mini two game series against the Nationals in Washington D.C. One of the losses included a heartbreaking 10 inning loss on a walk off homerun by Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman after the Yankees lead the game 6 – 2 after 4 innings.

New York finished their road trip with an abysmal 2 – 9 record. The team needed to get back home and try to avenge this road trip with a six game home stand, starting up with a 3 game series against the Texas Rangers. The Yankees were down 7 to 0 to Texas in just the third inning as Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda struggled in his second straight start. The Yankees did come back twice with two big three run homeruns, one by Didi Gregorious and one by Garrett Jones. The Yankees then trailed 10 to 8 going into the 9th inning and got some more help with a solo homerun from Mark Texieira. That made the game 10 – 9 but the Yankees attempt at a comeback came up just short as they would go on to lose the game 10 -9. The loss was painful to start off the series but the Yankees did show heart and didn’t quit when things were looking bad. However things went from bad to worst the very next day for the Yankees as they played the second game of their three game series against the Rangers. The Yankees were embarrassed by the Rangers on Saturday afternoon losing by the final score of 15 to 4. The team was down 13 to 0 after just six innings. They’ve given up 25 runs in the first two games against the Rangers.

It maybe two early to say at this point that the Yankees have hit rock bottom but they have certainly reached a low point in the middle part of their season. The team is struggling to hit, struggling to pitch and have just lost the lead in the American League East division to the Rays who have been playing well recently. The Yankees are now just one game over 500. with a record of 22 – 21. There is still a majority of the season to go and its still too early to count the Yankees out now, but the Yankees have to play much better  than what they’ve shown the last 10 games. They are 1 – 9 and have dropped five straight games, and the only way to get out of this slump is  to having their hitting and pitching get back to form.
