Re-Sign or Let Go: Thaddeus Young

Thaddeus Young was acquired by the Brooklyn Nets at the trade deadline in exchange for Kevin Garnett last season and Young’s production was a major reason why the Nets squeezed their way into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. Young has a $9.7 Million player option and it is believed by many sources that Young will pick up that option keeping him in Brooklyn for another season, but nothing is a guarantee yet.

Nets General Manager Billy King told Nets season ticket holders in a letter that the goal for the front office is to keep Young and Brook Lopez and build around them, so all signs are pointing to the Nets wanting to keep Young not just for this season, but also for the long-term.

Young and his wife Shekinah have already become fan favorites this off-season. Shekinah Young called it spring cleaning and she surprised numerous Nets fans and rewarded them with autographed gear from Thaddeus Young himself.

In 28 games with the Nets last season, Young averaged 13.8 points, 5.9 rebounds per game and he was shooting the ball at 50% from the field. During the postseason, Young emerged as the team’s garbage man, he did all of the dirty work and the little things often get overlooked, but Young certainly had a huge impact in the Nets series against the Atlanta Hawks. Young averaged 10.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and although the Nets fell to Atlanta, they gave the number one seed in the Eastern Conference a run for their money taking them to six games.

Young is only 26-years-old, but he emerged as a leader for Brooklyn during the postseason. After a gruesome Game 2 performance in which Young only scored 2 points on 1-7 from the field, Young apologized to his teammates for his lackluster performance.“Fellas, I’m sorry,” Young said. “I didn’t give you guys anything tonight and it got to be better.”

Like any great leader would do, Young was the first player to be at shoot-around before game three and he was the last to leave. Young had a bounce back game in front of a raucous Barclays Center crowd, collecting 18 points and 11 rebounds to help make the series competitive.

Keeping Young is one of the main priorities for the Nets this offseason and King has stated that they will do whatever is necessary to keep Young and Lopez even if that means going over the luxury tax. I expect to see Young in a Nets uniform next season and in the fututre.
