19-year-old Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis is expected to be a top 10 pick and has been dubbed by many international scouts as the best player in the 2015 NBA draft.
Porzingis had a workout on Friday in Las Vegas which many teams and scouts attended, Derek Fisher and Phil Jackson were among them.
According to draft express, Fisher and Jackson were intrigued by the Latvian and are now interested in drafting him fourth overall because of how well he would fit in the triangle. Porzingis recently said that he hopes to be drafted by the New York Knicks. The Philadelphia 76ers, who are drafting third overall, are also very high on Porzingis.
Kristaps stands at seven feet one inches, weighs in at a measly 210 pounds but has a gigantic wingspan of seven feet five inches. He is only 19-year-old and will turn 20-years-old in early August. Porzingis has been a professional basketball player for four years but has only played in three of those years.
He has played for two teams both of which are located in Spain. The young man will also gain international experience this summer as he will be a part of the Latvian National Men’s Basketball Team who will participate in EuroBasket.
The already four year international pro displayed the ability to shoot from all spots on the floor and his range extended behind the arc. Porzingis his athleticism, getting well above the rim off either foot. He was a relatively good ball handler for his size. On the defensive side of the floor Porzingis is very agile and defends well on the pick and roll allowing him to switch on to guards and hold his own.
The 19-year-old does have weaknesses which include rebounding and shot blocking. Porzingis is also very slight weighing 210 pounds and often gets outmuscled in the post on both ends and on the glass. He is a hopeless passer, dishing out an astounding 41 assists over the past three seasons. The Latvian has no back to the basket game and usually stays away from the rim.
Porzingis averaged 11 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, 1 block per game on 50% from the field, 36% from behind the arc and 75% from the line Baloncesto Sevilla last year.
The 2015 NBA Draft is on June 25th and the first pick is to be made at 7 pm ET. The Barclays Center in Brooklyn will play host.
