After yet another dreadful outing in relief last night, Joe Girardi and the New York Yankees have assigned Esmil Rogers to Triple-A Scranton.
Rogers has been struggling all season, but his breaking point was last night. He gave up four runs in two innings, inflating his ERA to 6.27.
Rogers has primarily been used as a long reliever, pitching 33 innings in 18 appearances. He has given up a whopping 19 runs in those innings though, leading to his demotion.
Lefty reliever Chris Capuano is now expected to be their main long reliever. Bryan Mitchell may also be called up from the minors to add a second long reliever, but that is still unknown.
Rogers can decline his assignment due to clauses in his contract, but if he does the Yankees are expected to release him and eat his contract.
