After weeks of rumors and speculation, New York City Football Club has made it official. They’ve officially signed veteran defender Andoni Iraola, and loaned out defender Angelino for a season.
Iraola comes from La Liga squad Athletic Biblao, where he’s played since 2003. He’s been a consistent force for them, appearing in 510 matches since then. This will be his first time with a club other than Biblao, as he spent two season on their B squad in 2001-2002. Iraola also has seven caps as a member of the Spanish National Team. He primarily plays right back, but can play the midfield fairly well.
Fellow Spanish defender Angelino will also join the new MLS club. He’s just 18 years old, and has played on Manchester City’s U-21 team. He’s primarily a left back, but can play in the midfield if necessary. He has tallied four goals and two assists in 20 games thus far, proving to be a force in their development team.
NYCFC signing these two players brings in flexibility on who they start in their attacking midfield and defense, two areas in which the club has struggled with mightily, while also ensuring depth has been added for the long haul ahead of the team as they attempt to reach the playoffs.
