Team of the Week- New York City FC
The newest MLS expansion club is continuing to roll after a slow start. They have now won three in a row, and haven’t loss in four. Their most recent victory came in Toronto as they upset the 6-5-2 club, raising their record to 4-7-5. David Villa scored both goals in the 2-0 effort, one on a penalty kick and the second time off a turnover. The team’s next matchup is against the Red Bulls, in the second edition of the NY Derby.
Play of the Week- Kwadwo Poku nets the bicycle kick goal
In a cup match against the New York Cosmos midfielder Kwadwo Poku put up an unbelievable goal. Poku dove backwards and kicked in the ball for a bicycle kick goal, possibly the most skillful goal in the club’s short history.
Game of the Week- Mets end Blue Jays streak in extras.
Riding an 11 game winning streak, the Toronto Blue Jays would be no easy win for the Mets. The Mets were actually leading 2-1 in the ninth before closer Jeurys Familia gave up a solo shot to Jose Bautista that tied up the score. In the 11th Toronto actually took a 3-2 lead before the Mets stormed back. Smart base running by Ruben Tejada lead to a Lucas Duda game tying double before Wilmer Flores smacked one into right field for the game winning base hit.
Player of the Week- Brett Gardner
Gardner has been on fire lately, and this past week was no difference. He went 10-24 with 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 6 runs in the seven game stretch. His most notable set of games was the Yankees two wins over Detroit. He went 7-11 with two homers and 4 runs scored and 3 RBI.
Performance of the week- Noah Syndergaard vs. the Blue Jays
Rookie phenom Noah Syndergaard was absolutely masterful in six innings against the top offense in baseball. He went six innings strong, giving up just two hits and one home run while striking out 11. He didn’t get the win after his bullpen blew the game, but that doesn’t take away from just how dominant he was.
Worst Team of the Week- New York Red Bulls
NYRB has really struggle as of late, dropping their last four games. Their most recent one was against the Vancouver Whitecaps, dropping that game at home 2-1. They were screwed from the start, with Sacha Kljestan being given a red card in just the 11th minute. They fell behind 2-0, but an 82nd minute goal by Anatole Abang gave the team hope. They did end up losing, largely in part because of wasted chances. They had two penalty kicks that were saved by the Vancouver goalie.
Transaction of the Week- NYCFC adds Iraola, Angelino
NYCFC has been overhauling their roster as of late, and these are two of their newest additions. A La Liga veteran Iraola is expected to start as a defender, while the 18 year old Angelino will get his first taste of professional soccer in the midfield. Angelino is coming from the Man City academy while Iraola is coming from Athletic Bilbao.
Feat of the Week- Alex Rodriguez goes yard for 3K
After a turbulent road to his comeback season, Alex Rodriguez has silenced all critics. He’s been playing great baseball, eclipsing the historical 3000 hit mark in grand fashion against the Tigers. He joins Derek Jeter and Wade Boggs to homer for 3k, and Jeter as the only Yankees to reach 3000 as a member of the team.
