New York City Football Club are targeting another player to anchor the defense in Colombian center back Jefferson Mena. NYCFC has also been linked with South African center back Tefu Mashamaite who trained with the club earlier this week.
Mena is currently a member of Independiente Medellín, a team in the Categoría Primera A, the top Colombian league. One thing that is important to note is this is the same club that Javier Calle is a part of, signalling that the two teams plan to establish a continued relationship. Calle is on a season long loan at NYCFC.
However, according to sources, NYCFC looks to buy Mena, not loan.
It is important to note that these rumors are not confirmed and just speculation.
What is interesting to look at is NYCFC are reportedly keen on signing both Mena and Mashamaite, which signals that at least one of their center backs may not have a future at NYCFC. Manchester City youth product Shay Facey’s loan was extended to the end of the MLS season, but his future beyond that is unknown. Facey signalled that he wanted to make a permanent move to NYCFC but it isn’t just his choice.
These moves could signal that a current center back on the roster may be sold or waived. A possible candidate to be waived is Kwame Watson-Siriboe.
