For the second consecutive week, New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard will have to wait to make his “Blue debut.”
It was reported on Friday that Lampard will not travel with the team to Foxborough for NYCFC’s key Eastern Conference matchup against the New England Revolution Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET, YES). The reports were shortly confirmed by NYCFC
Lampard injured his calf in training last week, forcing him to miss his original debut against Toronto FC, a match where NYCFC pulled a thrilling 4-4 draw. According to NYCFC officials and reports, his calf has yet to fully heal and with New England playing on turf instead of grass, holding Lampard back one more week instead of risking further injury seems to be the motive by the Blues.
He has trained this week and is expected to be ready to go next Sunday against Orlando City SC in the Bronx. Should Lampard debut next Sunday, it’ll mark a bigger “Blue debut” than the one that was scheduled for July 12, as he’ll debut alongside Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo in the Bronx.
Lampard had a press conference on July to announce his (definite) arrival at NYCFC, but has yet to play a game since.
Yes NYCFC supporters, expect the club to market that debut fully throughout the week.
